MOVIE NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM
JIM CULLEN: NEW ENGLAND'S ONLY LYNCHING
Facts, Folklore, & What Really Happened
150 years ago James Cullen was swung into eternity at the hands of a lynch mob in Mapleton, Maine on April 30, 1873 becoming the only victim of lynching in New England. In her new book, They Lynched Jim Cullen, New England’s Only Lynching, Facts, Folklore, and – What Really Happened, Dr. Dena L. Winslow tells the story of this tragedy when Aroostook County residents were shaken to the core after a small group of local folks lynched James Cullen in Mapleton.
Since these events that fateful spring of 1873 which left three men dead, a lot of new evidence has come to light which makes it highly probable that Jim Cullen was NOT the person who murdered the two men he was accused of killing. Jim Cullen may well have been an innocent victim like most other lynching victims in the US were.
This new evidence will be presented by Dr. Winslow in a very special program at the Caribou Historical Center & Museum in recognition of this significant historical event.
